Food insecurity is a serious issue in Texas, particularly for children. According to the Texas Hunger Initiative, 1 in 4 children in Texas are food insecure, meaning they don’t have consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. This is a result of the increasing cost of living, stagnant wages, and limited access to healthy food options in many communities. In addition, the Texas economy has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, further exacerbating the issue.
Food insecurity for children in the summer is an issue that should be taken seriously. The reality is that many children in the United States and around the world are not getting the nutrition they need to thrive. This is especially true for children in low-income households, who often lack access to healthy, affordable food. Unfortunately, this problem is exacerbated during the summer months, when children are out of school and may not have access to school meal programs. This means that many children are going hungry during the summer months, and this is unacceptable.
